Air Flow Management Data Center Air Flow Management Cold Aisle Containment

Project Overview

The FlexRail™ Aisle Containment System is a new approach to achieving enhanced field safety while reducing cost and improving speed. A smart double slotted extrusion design allows for easy, intuitive assembly and flexibility in field configuration and sizing. Floor based assembly reduces lift time for improved life safety and minimizes 2-person operations for better Covid prevention.

Background

The FlexRail™ Aisle Containment System is a new approach to achieving enhanced field safety while reducing cost and improving speed. A smart double slotted extrusion design allows for easy, intuitive assembly and flexibility in field configuration and sizing. Floor based assembly reduces lift time for improved life safety and minimizes 2-person operations for better Covid prevention.

Challenge

The facility was supplying significantly more cooling than necessary, leading to energy waste and increased operational costs.

Solution

Polargy implemented a Cold Aisle Containment strategy, which included:

  • Installing PolarPlex™ Containment Panels to isolate cold aisles.
  • Utilizing blanking sheets to seal empty rack units.
  • Applying PolarDAM Air Dam Foam to block airflow under racks and seal gaps between rack sides and mounting rails.

Products Used

Results

  • Energy Savings: Achieved annual savings of 306,600 kWh, translating to approximately $30,000.
  • Rapid ROI: Realized a payback period of just 3.7 months.
  • Operational Efficiency: Decommissioned one CRAC unit and set two others to fan-only mode, reducing equipment wear and maintenance costs.
  • Temperature Stability: Reduced server inlet temperature variation from 20°F to 6°F, enhancing equipment reliability.
  • Incentive: Secured a $9,350 rebate from PG&E for energy efficiency improvements.

Project

Floor based assembly minimizes overhead work. Light weight structure enables easy lifting of assembly into ceiling with hand crank jacks.

Minimal Two-Person Operations

Workers physically separated throughout the floor assembly and ceiling installation process. Single person on lift for ceiling attachment work.
