What Is Floor-Mounted Aisle Containment?
Floor-mounted aisle containment is supported by the data hall floor rather than by the building ceiling or overhead steel. These aisle containment systems may be freestanding, supported by their own structural framework, or designed to work independently of the existing ceiling structure.
That can be a major advantage in facilities where overhead attachment points are limited, difficult to access, or not designed to carry additional loads. Floor-mounted containment can also give project teams greater control over the system because it depends less on the base building structure.
For some projects, floor-mounted containment is less about avoiding the ceiling and more about creating a platform that can support the full white-space design.
What Is Ceiling-Supported Aisle Containment?
Ceiling-supported aisle containment is suspended from or integrated with an overhead structural system. Instead of transferring the load to the floor, the containment is supported from above.
This approach can work well when a structural ceiling or overhead grid is already part of the data center design, and it can also help keep the floor area around the racks and aisles more open.
In new construction, this approach can be especially effective when the structural ceiling, containment, power, cooling, and cabling are all planned together.
To put it simply, the biggest difference is where the load goes: A floor-mounted system transfers its load to the floor, and a ceiling-supported system transfers its load to the overhead structure. That difference affects much more than the containment panels themselves.
It can influence structural engineering, trade coordination, installation sequencing, future expansion, and the amount of infrastructure the system can support.
